Font Studio — Guides

Start from the problem.

Practical walkthroughs for the jobs that bring people to a font toolkit — each one solved end to end in Font Studio, on device.

  1. 01Font EditorHow to edit a TTF fontEdit a TTF (or OTF) font on your phone or tablet: open it, change glyphs or metrics, validate the result, and export — the complete editing loop, on one device.
  2. 02Font EditorHow to remove unused glyphs from a fontDelete characters a project never uses — whole scripts, symbol blocks, leftover experiments — and export a leaner font, entirely on device.
  3. 03Font SubsetterHow to reduce font file sizeShrink a font file by subsetting to the characters you actually use — routinely an 80–95% cut for Latin text — then validate and convert for the target platform.
  4. 04Font RepairHow to repair a corrupted fontA font that won't install or renders wrong is usually structurally damaged. Diagnose it with a health scan, preview the repairs, and fix it — on device.
  5. 05Font MergerHow to merge two fontsCombine a base font with glyphs from a donor font: compare character by character, choose a scope and conflict policy, and build one file — on device.
  6. 06Font Editor for AndroidHow to edit fonts on AndroidThe phone-first font editing workflow: get the font onto the phone, inspect it, edit glyphs or metrics by touch, validate, and export — no desktop involved.
  7. 07Font Editor for AndroidHow to create a font on AndroidDesign a typeface from scratch on your Android phone: scaffold the character set with the wizard, draw each glyph by touch, and export a real TTF.
  8. 08Font ConverterHow to convert TTF to WOFFConvert a TTF (or OTF) to WOFF for the web — a lossless re-packaging on your device — and know exactly what changes and what doesn't.
  9. 09Glyph EditorHow to create a font from your handwritingTurn your handwriting into a working font: write a controlled specimen on paper, trace each character in Draw mode, and export an installable TTF.
  10. 10Font ConverterTTF vs OTF: the differences that actually matterTTF and OTF differ in one thing — the outline engine inside — and everything practical follows from it. A plain-language comparison, with a decision rule.
  11. 11Glyph EditorHow to build a variable dot font (wght + ROND axes)Turn a pixel-grid dot font into a real variable TTF with two axes — wght for dot size, ROND for square-to-round — on your phone, then verify it with fontTools.
  12. 12Font EditorFixing Arabic joining: building Lam-Alef ligatures that actually shapeWhy an Arabic font with every letter still renders disconnected: joining types, init/medi/fina substitutions, the rlig ligature family — and how to build fonts that join.
  13. 13Font EditorReplacing one emoji in Noto Color Emoji (CBDT/CBLC, no glyf table)Bitmap emoji fonts have no outlines to edit — that's why your tools say 'no glyf table'. Swap individual PNGs in a CBDT/CBLC font on device, free, and export it.
  14. 14Font EditorWhy your kerning disappears: the kern table vs GPOSKerning can live in the legacy kern table or in GPOS — and apps read them with different priorities. How to tell which one a font uses, and edit either on device.
  15. 15Font EditorComposite glyphs: how é works, and why subsetting can break ité usually stores no outline of its own — it points at e and an accent. How composites work, why naive subsetting orphans them, and when to decompose.
  16. 16Font ConverterConverting TTF to WOFF2: what Brotli actually buys youWOFF2 transforms your font's internals before Brotli ever runs — measured 54–57% of the original TTF on real fonts. What changes, what doesn't, and how to convert on device.
  17. 17Font EditorHow to add a ligature to a font (fi, and everything else)A ligature is a glyph plus a GSUB rule — build both for ct on Roboto, on your phone, then verify the exported font's GSUB table and shape text through HarfBuzz.
  18. 18Font EditorAdding real small caps to a font (smcp, c2sc)Real small caps are unencoded .sc glyphs plus a smcp feature — not CSS-synthesized shrunk capitals. Generate 373 of them in one batch and wire the feature, on device.
  19. 19Font EditorFrom variable to static: instancing a variable fontExporting a variable font to a static format copies it as-is — real instancing evaluates outlines, metrics, kerning and marks at one location. Do it on device, then verify.
  20. 20Font EditorWhy your font shows the wrong name (and how to rename it properly)The name table holds several records — family, full name, PostScript — and every app reads a different one. Rename all of them as a consistent set, on your phone.
